Coal Creek Power Plant is the largest power plant in the U.S. state of North Dakota. Located at near the Missouri River between Underwood, North Dakota and Washburn, North Dakota, it is the largest lignite-fired electricity plant in North Dakota. Its two generators are each rated at 605 megawatts (Unit 1 went in service in 1979, Unit 2 came online in 1980), with a peak total production of nearly 1.2 gigawatts.
The station is owned by Great River Energy, an alliance of Minnesota rural electric cooperatives, and trasmits its power to Minnesota over a 700 kilometres (430 mi) HVDC transmission line which is operated at +/- 400 kV. The line and plant were completed and put in service by 1981.
The Coal Creek Power Plant, part of the larger CU Project, was the subject of controversy.
The boiler building of Coal Creek Station is 89.91 metres high. Hereby the boiler is fixed to the roof. The chimney of Coal Creek Station is 198.12 metres tall.
Coal Creek Station is the third-largest producer of coal ash in the country, generating over four million pounds of surface waste stored onsite each year.Some of the waste heat generated by the coal combustion is utilized by the nearby Blue Flint Ethanol plant.

The Mount Storm Coal Power Plant, located on the west bank of Mount Storm Lake 2 miles (3 km) from Bismarck, West Virginia, is a coal-fired power station owned by Dominion Resources. It is the largest power plant that Dominion operates. Mt. Storm's three units can generate more than 1,600 megawatts of electricity from coal synfuel, although these units can also run on distillate fuel oil.

Big Bend Coal Power Plant

The scrubber for Big Bend Coal Power Plant Unit 4 began operation in 1984, and since 1995, has simultaneously scrubbed Unit 3 as well. The scrubber for Units 1 and 2 began operation at the end of 1999. According to TECO Energy, the scrubber system removes 95% of sulfur dioxide from all four units.

Location
The Homer City Coal Power Plant is located in Center Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, occupying approximately 2,400 acres (9.7 km2). The site also includes the 1,800-acre (7.3 km2) Two Lick Reservoir, a water conservation facility which is operated by the station.
Coal supply
As of 2005, bituminous coal was delivered to the Homer City Generating Station by truck. Units 1 and 2 burned local Pennsylvania coal (that is cleaned on site in a coal cleaning plant) or Western Pennsylvania Pittsburgh seam coal. A flue gas desulfurization unit (scrubber) was added to Unit 3 which allows the unit to burn local coal. But now with diminishing local coal and mines to support it, they have reopened the train track that runs through Indiana University of Pennsylvania and now supplies are brought in by train.
Water use
Boiler water make up, condenser cooling water and potable water is taken from Two Lick Creek, processed through various pretreatment facilities, used and discharged through various environmental treatment facilities and returned to Two Lick Creek and Blacklick Creek.From there the Black Lick enters the Conemaugh River, which goes on to meet the Loyalhanna River, creating the Kiskiminetas River, before entering the Allegheny River.
Pollution
This plant is a major polluter, ranking highly both nationally and within the state, recently releasing 8,500,000 pounds (3,860 metric tons) of toxic chemicals according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Pennsylvania has ranked it the #2 polluter in the state. Homer City Generating Station releases huge amounts of mercury, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and other toxic or damaging chemicals. A scrubber was added in 1998 which reduced mercury output.
Mercury pollution
- In 1998, Homer City Generating Station produced a total (air and other) of 2,963 pounds (1,344 kg) of mercury according to the Environmental Working Group.
- In 2002, one source (Clear the Air (Hong Kong)) claims its air output of mercury was 545 pounds (247 kg).
- For 2003 another source (Environment Maine Research and Policy Center) claims it produced 665 pounds (302 kg) of mercury air pollution.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) pollution
- In 1995, Homer City put out 127,383 pounds (57.780 metric tons) of SO2.
- In 2003, Homer City put out 151,262 pounds (68.611 metric tons) of SO2 and was ranked SO2 polluter #4 in the nation.
Selenium in wastewater discharges
In 2007, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) fined the owners of the Homer City electricity generating station, EME Homer City Generation LP, $200,000 for violating the Pennsylvania Clean Streams Law. The station exceeded its permitted effluent standards for selenium, total suspended solids, and biochemical oxygen demand in its wastewater discharges, and allowed unpermitted discharges of stormwater associated with its flue gas desulfurization scrubbers. "The facility has exceeded the effluent standards of its permit numerous times between December 2001 and the present, and this pattern of violations has to be addressed," DEP Southwest Regional Director Kenneth Bowman was quoted saying.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
In 2003, Homer City put out 14,000,000 pounds (6,400 metric tons) of CO2 and was ranked CO2 emitter #28 in the nation.
According to Public Citizen: "The plant ranks #33 in the nation for total CO2 emissions, contributing 13,745,174 tons of the pollutant primarily responsible for global warming to our atmosphere."
Architectural Mention
The plant's Unit 3 has a 371 metre (1,217 ft) tall chimney, which was built in 1977. This chimney is currently the third tallest chimney in the world, the second tallest in North America, and the tallest in the United States. On clear days, it is possible to spot the chimney from as far south as Greensburg, Pennsylvania and as far east as Ebensburg, Pennsylvania.

Belews Creek Coal Steam Power Station is a 2.24-GW, two-unit coal-fired generating facility located in Belews Lake in Stokes County, North Carolina. It is Duke Energy’s largest coal-burning power plant in the Carolinas and consistently ranks among the most efficient coal facilities in the United States. During 2006, it was the fifth most efficient coal power plant in the United States with a heat rate of 9,023 Btu/kWh (37.8% conversion efficiency). The remaining 62.2% of energy released by the burning coal is in the form of heat. It is dumped into Belews Lake, a man-made lake created by Duke Power for cooling water purposes in the early 1970s. In 2008, it was the most efficient coal power plant in the United States with a heat rate of 9,204 BTU/KWh.
The Belews Creek Coal Steam Power Station consists of two nearly identical units, launched into operation in 1974 and 1975. Each furnace, a Babcock & Wilcox boiler, heats steam to 1,000 °F (538 °C) in both the secondary superheater and reheater sections. The boilers are supercritical units, operating at 3,400 pounds per square inch (230 atm) of pressure. All four generators (two low pressure generators and two high pressure/intermediate pressure generators) are Westinghouse generators. The high and intermediate-pressure steam turbines were originally Westinghouse units, but were replaced during an Alstom steam-path upgrade. The low pressure turbines are original Westinghouse units.
The Belews Creek Coal Steam Power Station employs multiple pollution control systems, including a selective catalytic reducer which removes nitrogen oxides, an electrostatic precipitator which removes fly ash, and low NOx burners in the boiler. The plant has completed a $500 million flue gas desulfurization project which came online during the beginning of 2008. This project has reduced the plant's sulfur dioxide emissions by 95%.

Lawsuit over Air Pollution at Martin Lake Plant
In July, 2007, the Sierra Club put EFH and its subsidiary, Luminant, on notice that the group intended to sue the company for Clean Air Act violations at its Martin Lake plant. The plant was rated as the first in the nation for power plant mercury emissions in 2005, emitting a total of 1,705 pounds of mercury that year. The Sierra Club claimed that both the U.S. EPA and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ignored soot pollution and other violations at the facility. They also claimed that Martin Lake was one of the dirtiest plants in the entire country in regard to particle pollution, mercury, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide. These toxins, the Sierra Club noted, are producing a great health risk to communities nearby. The facility currently uses scrubber technology.
In September 2010, EFH and its Luminant Generation unit were sued by the Sierra Club over pollution emitted by the Martin Lake plant. The plant near Longview is among the dirtiest in the U.S., the environmental group said in its complaint filed in federal court in Texarkana, Texas: “It is the worst power plant for mercury pollution among all U.S. coal plants, emitting 1,764 pounds in 2008,” the Sierra Club said in a statement. The San Francisco-based group asked a judge to find the plant’s operators in violation of the U.S. Clean Air Act.
Environmental Integrity Project Reports Luminant's Martin Lake Plant Nation's Worst for Mercury Emissions
In March 2010 the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) released a report using available EPA data that indicated half of the country's 50 largest mercury-emitting power plants have increased their emissions in recent years. The report also noted that half of the coal plants in the United States do not have the most up to date emission controls in place, and five of the plants with the highest amount of mercury emitted are located in Texas.
Coal-fired power plants generate more than 40 percent of U.S. emissions. Mercury released into the air settles in rivers and lakes, where it moves through the food chain to the fish that people eat. The report states that Luminant's Martin Lake Steam Station in Texas is the nation's worst mercury polluter. The plant reported a 4.56 percent increase from 2007 to 2008.
Martin Lake ranked 5th in largest carbon dioxide emissions
Martin Lake Coal Power Plant ranked 5th in terms of largest carbon dioxide emissions according to a 2009 report by Environment America, "America's Biggest Polluters," the Martin Lake station is the fifth dirtiest plant in the nation, releasing 21.8 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2007. Navajo Coal Generating Station is a coal-fired powerplant with a power of 2280 megawatts located on the Navajo Indian Reservation, near Page, Arizona, USA. Navajo Generating Station has three 236 meter high chimneys, which are among the tallest structures in Arizona. This plant provides electrical power to customers in Arizona, Nevada, and California. It was assembled during the 1970s and began producing commercial power in 1975. The construction costs were about $650 million, with an additional $420 million for new environmental scrubbers, constructed during the 1990s.
The Navajo Coal Power Plant is served by coal mined at the Kayenta Mine near Kayenta, Arizona, and hauled by the Black Mesa and Lake Powell railroad. The Kayenta mine ships about 8 million tons of coal each year to the power plant.
The Navajo Coal Power Plant emits 19.9 million tons of CO2 per year. The power plant is equipped with electrostatic precipitators to control fly ash, and has a lined water reservoir to help recover and contain process waste. The central smokestack and two cooling towers can be seen from as far west as Evansville, 45 miles to the west, as far north as the U.S. 231-Interstate 64 Junction, and as far east as Lewisport, Kentucky and Tell City, Indiana. It can also be seen as far south as Owensboro, Kentucky as well.
Rockport Coal Power Plant is operated by Indiana Michigan Power, a branch of American Electric Power. During the 1980s a brief public walk-through simulator was set up in an office building across the road from the plant. It allowed the public to literally walk through and see how electricity was made at this power plant at that time. A decline in visitors and overhead needed to run the office, as well as the plants change in ownership, figured well into the closing of this public service. It is now offices for the Warrick Economic Development Corporation. Two identical non-cyclonic Babcock & Wilcox units (1.3 GW each) were launched into service in December 1984 and December 1989. They are among the largest coal units built.
The coal is delivered to the plant by rail road and by barges along the Ohio River.

John E. Amos Coal Power Plant is a three-unit coal-fired power plant owned and operated by Appalachian Power, a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP). With a nameplate rating of 2,933 MW, it is the largest utility in the AEP system. John E. Amos Coal Power Plant was named after a Democratic National Committeeman from West Virginia. The plant is located between the US Route 35 (Winfield Road) and the Kanawha River, on its riverfront.
Units 1 and 2 are of 816.3 MW nameplate capacity each, and were started up in September 1971, and June, 1972 respectively. Unit 3, rated at 1,300 MW, was started up in October, 1973. All units are super-critical, dry-bottom boilers powered by a blend of low-sulfur coal and Northern Appalachian Basin high-sulfur coal. The Babcock and Wilcox Company (B&W) has been awarded a contract valued well in excess of $100 million to supply and construct wet flue gas desulfurization on all three units. The Monroe Coal Power Plant is a coal-fired power plant located / 41.88917; -83.34556 in Monroe, Michigan on the western shore of Lake Erie. Monroe Coal Power Plant is owned by the Detroit Edison Company, a subsidiary of DTE Energy. The plant was constructed in the early 1970s and was completed in 1974. The plant has 4 generating units, each with an output of 850 megawatts. With all four generating units operating, the plants total output is 3,300 megawatts, the eleventh largest electric plant in the United States. It is the second largest coal fired plant in the United States after Georgia Power's Plant Bowen near Cartersville, Georgia.
The Monroe Coal Power Plant did significant upgrades and maintenance at the facility in late 2007 and 2008. FGD's, or Sulfur-oxide "scrubbers", are in the process of being added to all of Monroe's generating units. These devices significantly reduce emitted SO2, and will be eventually installed in more of Detroit Edison's coal plants.
The Monroe Coal Power Plant connects to the power grid by numerous 120,000 and 345,000 volt transmission lines, owned and maintained by International Transmission Company (ITC). Two of the 345kv lines going out of the plant interconnect with First Energy in Ohio (Bayshore-Monroe line and the Majestic-Monroe-Allen Junction Line).

The Bowen Coal Power Station is a coal-fired power station located in Euharlee, United States, approximately 14 km (8.7 mi) west-south-west from Cartersville. At 3,499 megawatts, Plant Bowen has the second largest generating capacity of any coal-fired power plant in North America, and the largest in the United States; only Ontario Power Generation's Nanticoke Generating Station in Canada has more generating capacity. Plant Bowen ranked third in the nation for net generation in 2006 producing over 22,630,000 MWh. The station is connected to the southeastern power grid by numerous 500 KV transmission lines, and is owned and operated by Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company.
Bowen's four cooling towers are 116 m (381 ft) tall and 97 m (318 ft) in diameter and can cool 1,100,000 litres (290,000 US gal) per minute. Another 26,000 litres (6,900 US gal) of water is lost to evaporation which creates the distinctive white clouds rising from each tower.
Bowen's two smokestacks are 300 m (980 ft) tall. Particulates are removed from the exhaust gases through the use of electrostatic precipitators. The exhaust gases are then closely monitored to comply with air quality regulations. In addition, SCR units have recently been constructed on all four units to meet federal clean air and ozone standards.
In 2006, Bowen was the largest emitter of sulfur dioxide in the United States (at 206,442 short tons (187,281,032 kg)), and ranked 39th worst in the nation in terms of sulfur dioxide emissions per kilowatt-hour of electricity produced. All four units at Bowen are scheduled for scrubber installations. Through these efforts, such emissions will be reduced by as much as 95%. Construction began in 2005 on the first two of four scrubbers and will take three years to complete. The scrubbers at Bowen will be among the largest fiberglass vessels ever to be built in the United States. The facility is the third largest producer of carbon dioxide, after Plant Scherer and James H. Miller Jr. Power Plant, emitting 20,500,000 short tons (1.86×1010 kg) of CO2 in the atmosphere each year.
